At present, anionic and non-ionic surfactants are mainly used in leather industry, while cationic and amphoteric surfactants are relatively less used. With the development of economy and the improvement of people's living standard, the demand for new leather is increasing, and the demand for leather auxiliaries is also higher. It is urgent to develop special detergents, soft finishing agents and waterproof finishing agents for leather products. As a new growth point of surfactant industry, the development and research of surfactant for leather industry will be paid more attention.

The environmental protection requirements of surfactants for leather industry are mainly reflected in two aspects: first, they are required to have good biodegradation performance and mild action; second, they are required to promote the penetration, absorption and fixation of other materials in the use process, and reduce the pollution of leather industry. The surfactants such as sucrose ester, alkenyl sulfonate, fatty acid methyl ester sulfonate and SEC alkyl sulfonate have broad prospects for development due to their good biodegradability and mild action.

In leather making industry, we should focus on developing soaking auxiliaries and degreasing agents that can reduce salt and grease pollution, assisting Liming and dehairing agents that can reduce sulfur pollution, fixing fixative oil fixative to promote dye and grease absorption, and assisting emulsion finishing agents with good performance, so that they can partly or completely replace solvent finishing. There is still a lot of work to be done in this regard.

In recent years, amphoteric surfactants based on phosphoric acid have been studied and developed at home and abroad. Phosphate ester leather fatliquor molecules contain phosphoric acid, which can combine with chromium salt and other multivalent metal salts, and at the same time can combine with leather fiber, giving leather permanent fatliquoring effect and good permeability. After fatliquoring, leather has good hydrophobic and mercerizing properties. In particular, it has good biodegradation performance, which can reduce the pollution of waste liquid and protect the ecological environment. It is an important direction for leather chemical material industry to develop various biodegradable leather surfactants.
